4 week cleaning schedule

Gah!  There's so much going on that I want to share right now, but I've been told that I have to wait...

...So for now I'm sharing a cleaning chart that I made incorporating At Home With Nikki's "1 Hour Home Cleaning Routine".  It works when I remind myself to do it...

How I go about my menu planning....

I got to thinking recently that I share my meal plans pretty regularly, but it might be useful for someone new to menu planning to understand my process...  So.  This is how we do.

There are a few things that I consider before I start willy-nilly picking out recipes for the week:

  • What to we have that needs to be used?
    • This means checking the fridge, freezer and the pantry
  • What is on sale and/or in season right now that I'd like to take advantage of?
    • This covers seasonal cravings like pot roast, too...
  • What does my family's schedule look like this week?
    • ...do either of the girls have Girl Scouts?  Do I have any meetings about school functions?  What does my husband's work schedule look like this week?  ...soup and salad or leftovers are usually on the menu on these nights.
  • What will my family want to eat this week?
    • I usually give my husband a few choices (i.e. pork chops or chicken legs?);  the kids are easier --pizza night is mostly for them

...So, this is what it might look like when I'm getting started:

Monday:  me- daytime meeting (this one really wasn't a big time-eater, but it's good to be prepared and avoid planning something huge that could require a lot of prep)
Tuesday:
Wednesday:  husband closes (my free night!!!  I can make anything I want to because the family's picky eater wont be here to complain about it!)
Thursday:  Moo Girl Scouts (when either of the girls have scouts, they need to eat early...  this could mean a sandwich before scouts and a snack after)
Friday:  pizza night (every Friday)
Saturday:  husband closes (another free night!)
Sunday:  husband off (I usually do my best to make something he won't hate)

...Now, I start filling in with our "usuals":

Monday:  me- daytime meeting
Tuesday:
Wednesday:  husband closes
Thursday:  Moo Girl Scouts
Friday:  pizza night
Saturday:  leftovers (having leftovers on Saturday gives us a little more time to play as a family)
Sunday:  soup and salad (same idea as above...  soup and salad=easy meal)

...Next, I check out Pinterest and choose from my recipe boards based on what we have and what we want to eat and fill in the blanks...

Monday:  Honey mustard pork chops (we had chops in the freezer, and the honey mustard chop recipe is one of my family's favorites)
Tuesday:  Roasted chicken (I had enough time to make my go-to chicken recipe)
Wednesday:  Quinoa chili (husband is working, which means I can make chili [that he's not a fan of but the rest of us love])
Thursday:  Curry chicken salad (made with leftover chicken, and nice and easy for a irl Scout meeting night)
Friday:  pizza night
Saturday:  leftovers (having leftovers on Saturday gives us a little more time to play as a family)
Sunday:  soup and salad (same idea as above...  soup and salad=easy meal)

I know that this looks wordy, but it all makes sense in my head...

Please, let me know what you think...
Did this help you?

The countdown is on...

Yes folks, it's that time of year again.....  THE KIDS ARE GOING BACK TO SCHOOL!!!

---no, I'm not excited...  why do you ask?

...just kidding...  I can't wait!

Now, I know the kids would be offended at this, so let me clarify:  I'm not excited that they'll be gone all day, I'm excited that I'll have more time to focus on some of the projects that I've had on my to-do list for far too long...  and that it'll be quiet because they'll be gone all day.  ;o)

So, I mentioned some of the organizational YouTubers that I've been watching awhile ago (I'm not sure which post...  maybe I'll link to it in the future, just not right at this moment).  One of them is At Home With Nikki, she does lots of organizational, time management, cleaning and decorating videos (apparently she has a blog, but I haven't checked it out at this point).  About two weeks ago she posted this video full of back to school tips...

Well, I jumped on it and went out and got supplies to make my own school information binder for the kids.  I'm so happy with it so far!  It has already helped me to stay on track with the little bits of registration that we I was slacking on.

Attempting to organize my home, my family and my life...

...well, I've been putting off this post for awhile...  Back in January, my New Year's resolution was a general "being a better me."  Overall, I'm pretty happy with the progress I've made.  However, I understand that life continues to change and I will continue to grow.

My health goals aren't quite what I had hoped for.  I haven't been doing cardio like I should, but I did lose those 11 lbs. since January, and I've only gained 1 lb. back...  so, not too bad, I guess.  Plus, yoga has become a part of my lifestyle at this point, which is ahhhmazing.  I love it!

Anyhoo, this post is supposed to be about organizing.  I've found a few ladies on YouTube who give great organizing tips...  there's Malitose79 (who also has her new channel, Organized Clutterbug), The Green Apple Home, Do It On a Dime, At Home With Nikki, Mridu Parikh and my current favorite, Home Organizing.  Lots of these ladies have blogs/websites to accompany their organizing channels (http://clutterbug.me/ is Malitose79's site, which has lots of great printables that I'd like to try out).

I just signed up for Alejandra's (from Home Organizing) "FREE 7-day 'Get Organized' Video Series" from her site alejandra.tv (look on the upper right side of the "start here" page).  When you sign up, you get a free video with an organizing tip every day for 7 days...  I watched the first one today, I'll do the "homework" today and will be sharing more on it soon.  My plan is to do a post for each of the videos...  I figure this might help to hold me accountable.  ::fingers crossed::

I've already gotten a lot of work done organizing the home with the tips that all of these ladies have shared...  I keep forgetting to take before pictures, but there will be a post soon with the current state of my kids' rooms in the very near future (I don't know that I would have wanted to show you the "before" pics, they were sooo bad!!!).

Check out these ladies' videos and sites and let me know what you think!

How do you control the chaos and clutter in your life?

A family "to do" list...

Just a quick note tonight...

I want to tell you guys about my latest attempt to organize my family and our home: a "to do" list for the whole family!!!  Mind you, this in in addition to the allowance jars and the family contribution flip-charts.  (I know I've shared at least one of these photos here before, but I thought it'd be nice to see them all together)

...for a job well done...

...Er, well, for one that's *done*, at least...

A few months back, I took some inspiration from Pinterest and had the kids make their own flip-up chore charts...  six chores each, nothing they can't handle.  I honestly don't remember if I posted about them or not...  and I can't find the pin that inspired it.  I just don't have time, as I'm writing this, doing dishes, making dinner and yelling at encouraging the kids to do their chores....

Anyhoo, the charts worked really well for awhile, and they still kind of do occasionally, but the girls have started asking for an allowance.  My husband jokingly said that we should pay them in pennies...  So this is what I decided to do:

Everybody has an assigned color, marked with a ribbon.  For each job they complete, they earn a penny.  Simple as that.

....We're expecting a worker's strike once they realize how low their wages are, at which point we'll increase their pay to a nickle per job.  That's a pretty awesome raise.

More natural house cleaning...

Thanks to Hulu Plus, I have a slight obsession with an Aussie show called "Lush House" (you can watch full episodes here).  I swear the host, Shannon Lush, is a flippin' genius.  Who knew you could disinfect with lavender oil?  ...or tea tree oil?  I didn't, so I'm gonna go ahead and assume that you didn't either.  I really want to check out all of Shannon Lush's books now!

I also discovered an amazing resource for family friendly, eco-friendly and budget-friendly cleaning.  Howtocleanthings.com helped me seriously decrease the nastiness of a rust stain in my kitchen sink (which was left by a metal thing that the people who lived here before us used to protect the bottom of the sink)....  I think that, with another treatment or two, it should be completely gone soon!

So, here are a few things that I've tested personally and learned really do work!:

  • Lemon oil works wonders.  It not only smells good, it keeps bugs away and can work as a deterrent for cats who like to make nasties on the floor (I'm lookin' at *you*, Fluffy!)
  • Clove oil makes my house smell like I just baked Christmas ham and it acts as a mold inhibitor!  Taking Miss Lush's mold spray one step further, I've made an after shower spray for our bathrooms that's easy and non-toxic, so the kids can spray the shower down when they're done!
    • Fill a spray bottle halfway with white vinegar, add two or three drops of clove oil and top it off with water.  Give it a shake before you spray it!  Easy peasy.
  • Cream of tartar can not only be used for baking delicious goodies, but it can also be used to clean aluminum and rust (as I mentioned earlier)
Do you make any of you own natural cleaners or do you have any "weird" cleaning tricks?

"I'm as mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!"...

...and I *mean* it this time!  I'm sick and tired of being overwhelmed by housework.  Not that I'm whining, but I'm fed up with being the only one that does any work around the house...  that is, unless we battle it out, in which case the kids will eventually come around after a lot of head-butting.

Well, I've had it.  I'm.  Done.

A couple of days ago, I had it up to the figurative "here" and set to work on a household chore chart.  This one is definitely not just for the kids, as I could use some help in the area of being motivated to get off my crafty butt and clean stuff up, too.

First I sat down and wrote out *every* household chore that I could think of.  Then,  I split it up based on where the work is (kitchen, bathrooms, home or laundry.  Finally, I broke it up into what has to be done when (daily, weekly, monthly or quarterly).  I put boxes next to each item, in some cases as many as five (this was in the case of laundry, which gets split up according to each child, Mom and Dad's and household) and color-coded them so the kids know exactly what their responsibilities are.  This was easy for them to grasp, given their colored laundry baskets they each chose a few months ago...

Moo is green, Rye is pink and O is blue.
This has made for easy organization
over the past few months and I can only
assume that it will continue to help over the years.

This is what I came up with...

Keep in mind, this is only the first page -daily and weekly- my plan is to print up both pages, plus my recipes for cleaners, laminate and hang them from rings.  So I'll have a flip chart with everything right there.  Here's one that you can print for yourself if your chores are anything like my family's (I only put one box next to each task here, but feel free to copy, paste and edit to your heart's content).

On a lighter note...  my last two manicures were fun, so I wanted to share...

This one was inspired by the vital juice purple kale manicure
that one of my friends linked to on Facebook.

...and this one was inspired by

And, last-but-most-definitely-not-least, I made my very first apron this week!!!  It consists of four coordinating fat quarters, it took about an hour in total (well, it would have if I hadn't been running around the house mothering my children), and it's *reversible*!!!  I used this tutorial.

I like this side the best...
this fabric was the whole reason
that I bought this particular fat quarter bundle.

...but I really am happy with both sides.
I finally have a cute apron to bake in...
Now to go make some cookies!

Yikes, I go a few days without posting and I end up having *so much* to catch up on!  Thanks for reading and please let me know if my chore chart was helpful for you/your family!

(And, in case you didn't catch the reference in this post's title...  it's from this movie.  Check out this famous clip)

Homemade natural cleaners...

...I've been sharing about making these on my personal Facebook page over the past few months.  When I first started making them I was a little unsure about how well they would work, but I knew I wanted to use natural cleaners and buying them at the store was breaking the bank.  After using them for a few months, I've grown to love them.  It's also helpful that you can make so many different cleaners with only a few ingredients!

What you'll need:

  • Borax
  • Arm & Hammer washing soda
  • bar soap of your choice
  • white vinegar
  • rubbing alcohol
  • filtered or distilled water
  • essential oil of you choice, citrus scents work well (optional)
from left to right, top to bottom: water, borax, washing soda,
rubbing alcohol, vinegar, bar soap, all natural essential oil

What you can make with these few ingredients:

  • dishwasher detergent
  • dishwasher rinse aid
  • general cleaner
  • glass cleaner
  • laundry detergent
  • fabric softener
  • mop water
from left to right: vinegar, fabric softener, laundry detergent,
glass cleaner, general cleaner

You *will* get a lot for you money!  I promise!  ....now let's get on with how to make them...

Dishwasher Detergent
Mix equal parts borax and washing soda.  Make sure you mix them well and get out all of the lumps of washing soda - I do this in a zipper freezer bag.  Use about 1 Tbsp per load.

Dishwasher Rinse Aid
Fill the rinse aid thingie in your dishwasher with vinegar.  It's like magic.

General (Almost) All-purpose Cleaner
Fill a spray bottle with half vinegar and half purified water.  Give it a shake to mix it all up.  The vinegar disinfects and the smell goes away quickly.

Glass Cleaner
Fill a spray bottle halfway with rubbing alcohol, add one Tbsp. vinegar and fill it up the rest of the way with purified water.  Shake it up.

Laundry Detergent
Mix one cup borax and one cup washing soda.  Using a fine cheese grater, grate a bar of soap into the mixture.  Use about 1/8 c. for each load of laundry...  do it like this:  Start your washer with HOT water (you can change it to the temp you want in a minute).  Add your detergent directly under the water while it's starting to fill.  Give it a couple of seconds so the detergent will dissolve a little bit.  Change the water temp if you like.  Proceed as usual.
NOTE: When you grate your soap, do it *slowly* and *carefully*  ...I cannot stress enough that you need to pay attention while you're doing this.  I grated off part of a knuckle the first time I did this.  It was a lot easier the second time, since I knew I had to take it slowly.

Fabric Softener
Mix equal parts water and vinegar.  Add a few drops of essential oil, if you like - only enough so that you can just barely smell it through the vinegar.  The amount that you add will depend on the scent that you choose.  Now, you can either add it during the rinse cycle, or you can keep in in a tub and leave some cotton fabric squares soaking in it.  When you need a fabric softener sheet, just wring out a sheet and toss it in the dryer with your wet clothes.  The vinegar helps to break down any leftover detergent residue and deodorizes as well.

Mop Water
You can add a splash of vinegar to hot water when mopping most types of flooring.  This is actually how most flooring companies recommend that you clean hardwood floors.

...I have gotten all of my ingredients at stores like Walmart or the dollar store.  I also picked up all of my spray bottles, tubs, measuring cups and the cheese grater at the dollar store.  You can expect to spend around $15-20 on everything the first time you make it all.  After that, it'll only be a few dollars at a time to keep individual ingredients stocked.

A gift for my readers...

...Menu planner printables! (click on the link below the picture to print....  please let me know if you're having any issues printing these, thanks!)

Enjoy!

(use these with my menu planner tutorial)

Also, please note that this is *not* my artwork...  this is all stuff that I got off of sites offering images for free, such as 4to40.com and others that I can't remember at the moment.

Apparently, I can't write while I'm listening to music that I love...

....because I want to start writing the lyrics!  So, rather than a post about my menu planner, you're going to get Regina Spektor lyrics instead.  That's cool, right?

No, I'm kidding....  but if you really want to sing along, here's the playlist I'm listening to:

Anyway, earlier tonight I realized that I didn't take any meat or anything out for dinner....  after posting this dilemma on Facebook ("Hmm...What to make for dinner tonight....?"), I got a few suggestions from some friends and a comment from my mom, "What's on your menu board?!?!?"

Oops.

So, I went to my kitchen and grabbed it.  I filled out what we ate last night and went to work at filling it out for the rest of the week.  (Thanks for keeping me on track, Mom!)

Here's what it is:
  • a 8 1/2" x 11" picture frame from the dollar store
  • a dry-erase marker
  • a piece of paper to fit your frame with the days of the week printed on it (I cut some scrapbook paper to fit and avoided using color ink that way)
  • some ribbon or string to hang the marker from the frame and to hang the frame if you like - I used hemp for mine
  • staples to secure the string for the marker to the frame
I think you can figure it out from there.  It literally took about five minutes in all.  Here's how you do it:
  1. Cut the paper to fit your frame and print the days of the week on it.
  2. Take the back off of the frame and clean the glass on the inside.  Let it dry.
  3. Fit the paper into the frame and put the back on the frame.
  4. Cut your ribbon or string to the desired length and tie it around the cap of the dry-erase marker (you can glue it if you please)
  5. CAREFULLY staple the other end of the ribbon or string to the *back of the upper right corner* of the frame
  6. You could be done now if you wanted to be, or you could tie a loop of ribbon or string to the back of the frame ( I just tied mine to the little metal hangie thing that was already on the frame)
  7. Hang it up in you kitchen or dining room
  8. Write your menu on it!
I totally made that more steps than it needed to be just to make it look like it was more work than it really was.

This is what mine looks like...
...but I made four or five inserts because I have decorating ADD.

I'm going to try to put together a few different styles of meal planners to share with you, my readers.  Hopefully I'll have them up in the next couple of days...  If I don't, please bug me about them 'cause I probably just spaced it out due to the chaos that comes with motherhood.
